Chilean Earthquake – Update

Attached is a PDF copy of a letter concerning Pastor Steven Well – who was raised in Chile, served there as a missionary, and is currently pastoring in Florida. His wife, Mariza, is Chilean. Steve is the son of Roy Well, who was both missionary and Chile’s national supervisor for many years. Chilean Earthquake

Saturday, February 27 – In the early hours of the morning, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Southern Chile, followed by a tsunami, which hit the Chilean coastline in 3 successive waves and spread all the way across the Pacific Ocean. South of Santiago, communication and utilities are not functional and food and water are unavailable to most. Roads, bridges, ports and infrastructure are destroyed – making distribution of relief supplies difficult.

Reports from retired UPCI missionary and national supervisor, Roy Well, and from Compassion Services International’s director, Scotty Slaydon, says onsite missionaries, Shane Hayes and Daniel Barkley, and pastors in the affected areas are unable to get to their churches due to the devastation. Damage reports are also not getting through to the pastors because of downed communication lines and towers. One pastor reported appliances being thrown across the room with the violence of the quake and their only local grocery store was destroyed. The following day, looters have removed whatever food it contained. Regional Field Supervisor Darry Crossley and help from the Santiago area are making their way to Concepcion with emergency food.

Food and water is a serious problem throughout the area. The search for survivors is hampered by sporadic response thus far. Buildings seem to have survived the quake better due to strong, enforced building codes and the overall loss of life is expected be far lower than that of Haiti. News photos show overturned semis, vehicles, and impassable roadbeds. Ships were stranded inland and port facilities were destroyed by the resulting tsunami. (See slide show below.) Prayer is urgently requested for the people of Chile, and for those who are and will be ministering and helping in this crisis. We will update this site as reports are received.

Touched by the problems in Haiti and the photos of those who’ve been so terribly affected, this young man decided to do something about it… He went out into his neighborhood and asked for contributions for Haitian relief to be sent to Compassion Services International. He collected over $102.00 – which has been forwarded on to CSI.

We are so thankful for the overwhelming response we’ve received from all across North America and the world. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! So many have donated supplies and finance while many others are willing to go and lend a helping hand. The response has honestly overwhelmed us, but that is a good problem! We are getting a handle on things and hope to soon have a streamlined system of processing applications for teams going into Haiti.

Our medical relief team is now on location in Haiti and will be there for the next few days doing clinics and assessing conditions for further medical tours. Some have asked if we needed clothing donations. At this time we do not need any clothing donated to the relief effort in Haiti, but we certainly appreciate the efforts of those who have gathered clothing. Perhaps these could be given to a local charity?

We are still in need of medical supplies and personal care kits. Right now we have enough supplies for at least two 40’ containers and the first one will go out next week.

I have been moved because of the thousands of earthquake orphans now in Haiti. The future of these children was already bleak and has now taken a dramatic turn for the worse. Please, pray the Lord’s protection on these children.

Born at Oakwood Hospital, in Dearborn, Michigan at 5:33 p.m., Noah weighed 9 lbs. 4 oz., and is 21.5 inches long.
