Sit Down and Shut Up
The Lord is Doing His Work
By Pastor Ken Foreman
Looking upon the landscape of snow and ice covered streets, I can confirm that the meteorologists got it right this time. A couple of days ago they said a storm was coming – a storm of 12 to 16 inches of snow and record breaking temperature as low as 13 degrees below zero, with a wind chill of 30 to 40 degrees below zero. Now, where I grew up, we experienced, not winter storms, but warm weather storms made up of tornadoes, hurricanes, wind and lighting. I remember how that, when a strong storm would come, Mom would tell all us children, “We’d better sit down and shut up, the Lord is doing His work.”
Sit Down: Mom made us sit down out of love, experience, and wisdom. Sometimes the Lord has to make us sit down. Jesus told his disciples make the people to sit down, and then, with five little loaves of bread and two fishes, He fed five thousand men, plus women and children. (John 6:10; Mark 6:39) I am reminded of Psalm 23:2-3, which says, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His Name’s sake.” I want you to know that God’s instructions are for a purpose, and we must be rightly positioned to receive from Him. We must be willing to sit down at the Master’s table where the feast of the Lord is going on.
Shut Up: It is amazing what we can hear when we are quiet. This is when we are able to get instruction and gain understanding. The only one who knows it all is God. Surely we can all learn something from Him. There are times when we should put a guard over our mouth to keep from saying the wrong things. To control the mouth is to control the body, and this action will assist in the control of our destiny. (See Psalm 141:3-4.) Moses told the people, “The LORD will fight for you, hold your peace. (Exodus 14:14) Next, God divided the Red Sea and they walked through it on dry ground. Their enemies, the Egyptian soldiers, were drowned in those same waters when they pursued them. Oh, what great battles the Lord can fight for us, when we are wise enough to hold our peace and shut up. He will not only fight for us but He will win the battle. We can declare victory through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He has done great things!
The Lord is Doing His Work: There must come a time in every child of God’s life, when we decide to trust in Him. It’s good to know that even in the midst of the storm, God is still in control. When God was in Christ, fulfilling the plan of the death, burial, and resurrection, Peter ignorantly tried to get in the way. He rebuked Jesus and said, “This will not happen to You.” Jesus told Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” (Matthew 16 21-23, NKJV) I want to always be on the same page with God. I want to be in harmony with what He is doing. The song writer said,
“All that thrills my soul is Jesus, He is more than life to me;
And the fairest of ten thousand, in my blessed Lord I see.”
Church, let us strive to be more mindful of the things of God than the things of man. That is how we will be in one accord with the Holy Spirit.
As I reflect back on those words of my Mom, I understand now that God was not in the wind or lighting but all those elements were made by Him. The tempest fulfills a purpose even when we may not understand. That little house of ours was considered nothing more than a shack. In the aftermath of storms we often discovered huge oak trees uprooted and removed, but our little shack stayed intact. How can that be? The answer is: God knows what He is doing.
In conclusion, It’s very important not to get in the way of what God is trying to accomplish in your life or in the lives of others. Are we greater than God? Can we resolve a matter better than He? His thoughts are higher than ours and His will is perfect. Here is good advice from a Mom who told her children what to do when storms came upon them; “Sit down and shut up, the Lord is doing His work!”
