Text: Romans 7:14-25
Paul the Apostle gives us all a Bible class on the spiritual and the carnal. He says the Law is spiritual and he is carnal, sold under sin. Paul talks about the inward struggle with sinful desires. As we learn to walk with God we will experience opportunities to do good or to do bad. I will label these encounters as influences. We often experience good and bad influences.
The Good: It is a great blessing to have good influences in your life; strong men of God who teach the word of God and impart wisdom. We have been blessed with Pastor Charles R. Grisham and others who dedicated their lives to the work of the ministry and the perfecting of the Saints. Good influence comes in many ways, by the word of God, the people of God, articles, poems, books, and more.
The Bad: Like Paul, we all experience negative influences. We are constantly bombarded with the wiles of the devil. The evil temptations of the flesh are bad influences as well. Paul said, “when I would do good, evil is present with me.” The Apostle James said,, “every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” (James 1:14)
Us: Charles Swindoll said that life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it. We may not be in charge of the daily influences that come our way but we have great control over the affects of those influences through the power of the Holy Ghost. When evil temptations knock on the door of our hearts, it is our choice to let them in or not. I Corinthians 10:13 says, “there hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Paul cried, “O Wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me form the body of this death? Then he said I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord…” (vs. 24-25)
Every day good and evil is present with us. The Holy Ghost will help us to choose to follow after that which is good.
